Hi everyone... looks like i'm finally jumping into the fray here.
Here's a riddle that someone gave me when i was at my last clinical affiliation. I didn't get it at all for eight weeks, and when he told me the answer, i was like "DUH!!!!"
btw, this was from a movie, so if you've seen the movie (don't know which one), don't spoil it for everyone... let people suffer for a while while they try to figure it out. so here it is:
You are stuck in a room. There are two doors at opposite ends of the room. One of the doors leads to freedom and safety, the other leads to instant death. In this room there are two statues. One of the statues always lies, and one of the statues always tells the truth, but you don't know which one is which. You can only ask one question, which both statues will answer in their respective ways. What one question can you ask that will lead you to 100% guaranteed safety and freedom?
You can ask me questions about the situation, and i'll answer them as best i can. the solution to this riddle is very, very clever. that's all for now, let's see what y'all got.

giving up already guys? c'mon, brainstorm a bit. ask me something, type something out... i might be able to clue you in to the answer. besides, i racked my brains for 8 whole weeks, so while i won't let you suffer that long, you gotta sweat at least a lil bit. [glow=red,2,300] [/glow] Happydoug

okay.... Question: are the statues situated in different parts of the room? is their placing relevant?

the statues are side by side, but their placing in the room is irrelevant. How they are placed gives you no hint as to which one is which.
Here's a hint: When i thought about the riddle, i decided that the only way to solve it was to ask the question in such a way that both would give me the same answer. So your goal would be to ask a question in a manner that would let both statues answer the same way. Remember, the lying statue is not evil or bad, it just lies.
that's the only real hint i can give w/o giving the answer away, although i'll still be happy to entertain questions to stimulate your collective cerebral corteces.

my answer is wrong i'm sure... since it involves no question... but, isn't death guaranteed safety and freedom?? therefore no question needs to be asked. either door will lead to the same conclusion (death), since death is the only state in which one is truly free from all restrictions and dangers. i know this is a philisophical answer to a physical question, but it's my solution nonetheless. p.s - sorry if this really is the answer, Doug... but i'm sure it's not.

there is a real answer, that is not philosophical. there is no magical or metaphysical or crazy ideological answer. Just one, simple, maddening question.
c'mon... you guys can figure it out. you need to get the lying statue to answer the same as the truthful one. that's it.

One final hint:
The key to solving this puzzle is to make the lying statue lie about itself. if you can figure out how to make it lie about itself, it will switch it's answer, and it will give you the same answer as the truthful statue.
I'm practically giving the answer away right now, so if you don't get it, well, let's just say i hope somebody gets it at this point.
