Thank you for the welcome note, Flashpoint... There do not seem to be too many people browsing through these aurora postings... is it worth continuing this thread or is it rather recommended to start a new one?

I'm not an admin but I'm going to authoritatively say Go Ahead and feel free to start a new thread! Keep these auroras coming.
Wow.
How far north do I have to drive before I'd start seeing these?

Allright then... it's going to happen very soon... How far north do you have to drive? That kind of depends where you are located... If your are living in Europe you might want to go to Scandinavia or Iceland... In case you live in North America, you may "drive" to to some northern part of the US where the Aurora has shown herself quite often (especially recently...) or (even better) go to Canada... My favorite place to go see and photograph the Northern Lights is Fairbanks, Alaska. And the Aurora is not seen at all times... it depends on solar and geomagnetic activity... more information about this at: borealis2000.com/news.htmlOn this site you may also subscribe to a free newsletter/aurora alert... You'll be notified in case of an Aurora appearance at lower latitudes, such as California, Texas, Germany or Great Britan (this only happens 2 to 4 times a year at the peak of an 11 year solar cycle!) Any more questions?

...looks like the winter is about to be over soon and some guys are waking up from their hybernation... Well, I'll be happy to contribute some more images to this forum, if there are still some people around. So if you are, make your voice heard and post something! My friend Chuck Johnson took this one on January 27 in Alaska. It's a unique photograph of a 2-stage Terrier-Black Brant IX rocket launch at the Poker Flat Research Range. The rocket flew 385 kilometers high through the aurora to obtain measurements that will help scientists understand the structure and characteristics of high-frequency waves and turbulence created by the aurora. Location: Cleary Summit, 20 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska Time: 10:50 pm on January 27 (07:50 UTC on Jan. 28) Camera: Olympus digital C3040, f1.8, 400 ISO 16 sec. exposure

Please keep posting Dirk. I might get very quiet but I'm definitely still here. I was just browsing the homepage of one John Russel - there are some very nice images there. Here's a link if anyone is interested: www.northernlightsnome.com/Index.htmlAnd a sample image while I'm at it.

Hello Flashpoint, yeah, John Russel is a good one... he lives way out there in Nome, Alaska which can only be reached by plane. He's got a great collection of Aurora images. Here's an image, that I took on March 31, 2001 north of Fairbanks, Alaska. That was a great night with plenty of multi-colored auroral displays. © Dirk Obudzinski 2001 more at borealis2000.com
