Not the greatest quality photo.. but I present to you the Aurora Australis This was taken in Northern New Zealand on the 6th. The southernmost portions of Australia *can* see them under the right circumstances. ;D I'm envious of the photographers too! I'm not envious of the cold though. --Flashpoint (Matthew Craig)

Nope. They could be seen even further south than Tucson.. but it just HAD to happen on the one rainy evening we've had in the last 2 months.
I'm not really sure if I could have seen anything in town had it been clear. Tucson has better light pollution laws than most cities but its still pretty damn bright. --Flashpoint (Matthew Craig)

Why I love spaceweather.com I guess I really should start citing the photographers of these things.. this one is fantastic. A new picture of the Aurora Australis. That reminds me, the southern hemisphere has one of my favorite names for a constellation - I think I could use that to start another thread somewhere. --Matt

Unfortunately they are fairly easy to miss. First of all they aren't THAT common at your latitude. Secondly - timing is everything. To see them you either have to be lucky, or very dedicated to looking for them (i.e. skywatching most of the night during strong geomagnetic storms.)
There have been a few nights where people in Mexico saw an aurora but I somehow managed to miss it.
--Matt
