Canberra's on Fire - Merry Christmas?

big bushfire shit going on here, pretty close to home. the air's full of smoke and the sun's gone rusty from the smog. emergency announcements have been issued, roads closed, houses evacuated. we lost power for about an hour too.

i'm concerned about alex (just_a_girl) as her house is in a suburb named on the emergency radio bulletin as 'on alert.' her house borders onto a big nature reserve which, although not on fire at the moment, ain't the safest thing to have right by your house. to make things ickier, she's out of town with her family, and i haven't been able to contact them.

on the bright side, emergency resources are being unified and the power's back on. the violent winds that have been fueling the fire are apparently scheduled to die down this evening, too.

send non-fiery vibes Canberra's way, please!

some fires have been 'contained' but there is still a crapload of tension here and (according to our chief fire guy) it's touch and go whether this can be subdued enough tonight to stop it spreading further tomorrow. he also said that it was going to take "a very long time to put all the fire out."

Damn, this has been a rough week, with BT's burglary and all. I hope that the new year shapes up to be a lot happier.

hey,
as far as i know my house is safe, i'm a bit worried about all my animals, they are all ouside in the yard, and i'm not sure how they will handle all the ash and smoke  
anyway hope everyone had a good christmas, i am stuck in brisbane, where it was 40 + degrees on Xmas day, way to hot for me..
and i wish everyone a happy new year, don't drink 2 much
