This was the scene that greeted us when we went down the coast this week. my family (woohoo) decided to take us on a mini-break to my granparents' coast house, right in the middle of all the bushfires going on right now. pretty much as soon as we got there, they cut off the power, closed off the roads and basically locked us into impending doom. a day after we got there, the fire closed in and they had to evacuate us down to the beach. luckily, they got things under control and we managed to get the fuck outta there. add into that a highly-stressed family, my dad's uncle dying (i just got back from the funeral in sydney), shitty stuff at work and me losing the auction for the Reverb CD on ebay (which i was bidding for on someone else's behalf), and you have an eventful/fucked week.

an interesting sidenote: fire is actually a catalyst for growth in the Australian bush. fire has been such an eternal part of the ancient landscape that plants have actually evolved to benefit from it. the example that springs to mind is the plant seeds that are made ready for germination by intense heat.
a gumtree on fire is a dangerous/freaky thing though. the oil can explode at any minute...
;D
