"PS also isn't as much of a graphical joke as N64"
Ha Ha... good one... I hope to *god* you're joking. Yes the N64 had some small textures, but (grapically speaking) it ran circles around the psx. The poly pushing power of the psx could never hide the insanely jagged edges and pixelated textures.
The psx and ps2 d-pad does take some getting used to - but it is absolutely horrible for fighting games.(of the 2d street-fighter-like variety) Just tears my thumb to peices.

i thought all true fighting fans got arcade fight sticks, b/c really none of the controllers is good for fighting. for instance i can't imagine the imprecision of the dpad on the xbox controller.
and i totally can't see the n64 gamepad as being good for fighting at all.
although i don't really like the ps gamepad for fighting, frankly i haven't liked fighting games on consoles for a long time. they are still a bit fun in arcades, especially that sword one (or ones), but i just grew tired of it.

The reason fighting game enthusiasts get some sort of arcade joystick is so they can play equally well on a console or at an arcade. This is especially important if one plans to enter tournaments.
Personally, I find the gamepad MUCH easier to use. (and it's nicer on the wrists!) I don't go to arcades and I'm not that competitve so I see no point in picking up a $90+! specialty controller.
The N64's D-pad was the same as the SNES's as far as thumb-murder is concerned (ie. much more forgiving than sony's version). The controller as a whole worked fine for fighting games, btw. I had no problems at any rate.

maybe its just me, but the N64 controller seems offbalance when it comes to fighting games (KIGold)..and the C buttons R kinda small and jumbled together, also the response of the game to the directional presses was memorably one of those 'worst control ever' fighting games...and Doug, Soulblade/Caliber=holy shit and about the graphics.....PS games seemed more immersive to me for some reason, minus the jagged edges....maybe N64 was TOO smooth, Wipe0ut64 bored me to death, (the sound on N64 sucked donkey balls, have to agree with that one) if you compare any N64 game to any PS game release....the PS game is either out first, or plays better...i guess thats just an opinion, oh well heheheheh..Street Fighter still rox , and once u get PAST fucking up ur thumb, u can put a lighter to it and u dont feel a thing ;D

The buttons on the N64 only feel jumbled together if you aren't used to the controller. I could play what little fighting games there were on the N64 controller just fine. And XS, it isn't fair to say the controller is bad because control feels sluggish in a game. If the control is sluggish that's because that's how the game developer's designed it. Besides, KI was supposed to have slightly sluggish controls so you had a second to get the combo's linked correctly (especially for the characters with charging moves.)
And my bro is right, only fighting game nuts who like to compete are willing to pay that much money for a special arcade joystick. I always managed fine on a d-pad on the home system, I think it's a whole lot easier to use then an arcade joy-stick. I hated playing Tekken on the PS, though, because the D-pad hurt like hell.
And, XS, I'm not quite sure what to tell you. While the PS could push more polygons, the N64 had a lot of extra features and could handle larger and clear textures. The only really significant difference was the fact the PS used CD's so they could cram a lot of pre-rendered stuff on the disks. If you're trying to compare a Final Fantasy game to Zelda, or something, well it just won't fly. Almost everything else, well, the bad texture qualities and the lack of anti-aliasing made most PS games look really dirty and unfocused (some developers got it right, but most didn't.)
And Laurie, I'd let you play Pikmin but 1. I don't have it, and 2. you live too far away. LOL

well how long does it take to get used to a controller? I got used to the controller relatively quickly for mario kart, but for virtually every other game, i had control problems, espeically with sports games that require a lot of different buttons. I remember when i first starting using the ps controller, it took me about 15-30 minutes to feel very comfortable with it, and i rarely ever had to look down for any other game. Also, while the separate d-pad directions may hurt for fighting, they are much more precise for sports games.
I think, mo, that the reason we differ quite a bit in our console tastes is our gaming tastes. I am a HUGE sports fan, and I love playing all kinds of sports on consoles. Sports games offer very good mulitplayer action, are exciting, can last as long (or as short) as you want, and all the drama that can happen in a real game can happen on a videogame. Also, sports games have virtually unlimited replayability (I remember playing Tecmo Super Bowl for almost a decade before switching to madden for good), which makes sports games great value. If I were more into platforming or "adventure" type games and had no interest in sports then i would probably gravitate towards the NGC. And I also am addicted to playing games whose goal is to get to the to get to the next cutscene. Again, this favors the ps2. I believe that if I was a more critical person on absolute gameplay (w/o caring about fmv's), then again i would gravitate towards the gc.
So in this, i think it's a matter of taste more than anything. The only time any of my fingers have hurt while playing my ps2 have come with the holding of the "x" button on GT3. The crazy button mashing of Devil May Cry gave my forearm a workout, but never really hurt.
Also, i've noticed that the "R1" button on many ps2 games has become sort of the "action" button that the "z" button is on the ngc. so what i'm saying is that there will be a lot of good cross-generalization b/w the ps2 and ngc in terms of controls.
Go Eagles!

well, the Eagles lost. it sucks.
more to the point, i've decided that someday i WILL get a gc. i just had a feeling looking at an ad that there will be maybe like 5-10 games that i cannot be without (with the first being Pikmin... I swear, there's something about that games that calls out to me, "Playyyyyyyyyyyyy meeeeeeee.")
So while I'm waiting for my next blockbuster GC, i'll be playing my 5-6 ps2 games to death that i keep in rotation.
Oh, another thought just struck me: If there is technology to make DVD megachangers, why not mega-videogame changers (that of course would include DVD replayability, CD, CDr/rw, Mp3 playback, etc.). Maybe not in this generation, but i definitely see it in the next gen.
just another random thought

i guess one of my dad's hick friends decided to mix a PS with a 5 disc carousel changer, and patented it or something to that nature.....not like anything like that would really catch on though yakno?....i personally dont see a market for something like that...for now, I remember I wanted the SNES Video Game Jukebox back in the day hahahahah..anyways.....sleepy....sleeeeeeeeeeeepyyyyyy....bye

reviving this thread.... since i last posted on this thread my Eagles have won a bunch of games, and are now in the NFC Championship game... go birds. I have also purchased and played a ton of new games, and there are just too many games and not enough time to play them.
SSX Tricky ownz... for all you tricky owners out there, i think we should post some high scores from the different levels. I believe the highest score i've had was like 640,000 on elesium alps with kaori... i could be wrong about the character though. maybe i'll make a whole new ssx tricky thread though.
i've also played and beaten final fantasy 10. i've never wanted to go back and play an FF game again, but this one is different... i actually WANT some of the music from that game stuck in my head (although i still don't get the idea of making the lead character very effeminate male), that game rocked.
other recent games: tony hawk pro skater 3 (very good, although my left thumb hurts after playing too long), and i'm still hooked on ace combat 4, even with all these other sick games.
i still have an obsession with pikmin, although i still don't see any other GCN games that interest me.
finally, i saw some movies for REZ... holy mother of all that's holy and holy. it's like one of those "Beyond the mind's eye" thingies that you get to play in... wow. wow wow wow. that and frequency... there just is not enough time in the day. lol
hope y'all didn't miss me too much. can't wait till games go online this year, and i get a place that i can use broadband on my ps2.
peace, Happydoug
